Theater counts: New challengers step up, but The Fantastic Four holds its ground as the widest release

July 31st, 2025

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps soared out of the gate with an impressive $118 million haul at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, cementing its status as a summer blockbuster heavyweight. The reboot’s strong debut gave Marvel’s first family a commanding lead, but the road ahead isn’t without obstacles. This weekend brings fresh competition in the form of The Naked Gun, a slapstick revival aiming to tickle audiences, and The Bad Guys 2, the animated sequel with a loyal following and plenty of momentum. With these newcomers entering the fray, The Fantastic Four will need to hold its ground to stay on top of the box office charts. More...

Theater counts: The Eras Tour holds off Five Nights at Freddy’s to remain widest release

October 26th, 2023

TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR

Despite dropping 82 locations this week, TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR will remain the widest release for the third consecutive week, still available in a 3,773 theaters, outpacing a bevy of newcomers, including the supernatural horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s as it makes its way into theaters. The concert film will likely fall into second place at the box office, but there are still plenty of opportunities to see the mega event on the big screen. More...

Featured VOD Review: GLOW: Season 1

June 20th, 2017

GLOW

GLOW is a new Netflix TV show loosely based on the real-life G.L.O.W., a.k.a. Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a late 1980s female wrestling show. It is a fictional account of how G.L.O.W. got started, but is it worth checking out? Does it take this obviously sensational material and create real drama? Or is it exploitative and do a disservice to G.L.O.W.’s legacy? More...

2016 Preview: February

February 1st, 2016

Deadpool

As expected, January was dominated by holdovers with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant leading the way. That's not to say there were no new releases that did well, as Ride Along 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3 were hits with moviegoers. Looking forward, there is only one film that looks like a sure hit, Deadpool. There's a slim chance it could be a surprise $200 million hit. There's a much better chance it will be the only $100 million hit. Conversely, last February started with a $100 million hit coming out, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, while there were two other $100 million movies to come out that month, Fifty Shades of Grey and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Looks like 2016 is going to lose in the year-over-year comparison. More...

Featured DVD Review: Save the Date

April 15th, 2013

Save the Date is a romantic comedy that opened in limited release with a Tomatometer Score below 50% positive. It should come as no surprise that the film struggled to find an audience; however, it really struggled opening below the Mendoza Line. It should perform better on the home market, as romantic comedies do better with mainstream audiences than the do with critics or art house aficionados. But will fans of the genre want to check out this movie? More...

Any Day is a Good Day for Limited Releases

December 14th, 2012

It is another busy week for limited releases, including some that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unfortunately, like it usually is at this time of year, unless a limited release is earning Oscar buzz, it is very unlikely to find an audience in limited release. Any Day Now is the film I have the highest hopes for, but even for a film with 88% positive reviews, it will be a challenge. More...
