There were plenty of new releases to chart this week, including the top two sellers. The new number one was Bedtime Stories 1.46 million units for its first full week of release, while including early sales it has made $28.78 million from 1.68 million in sales.

There were six new releases to chart this week, but three of the top four were holdovers. That one new release was The Day the Earth Stood Still, which earned 50% more than last week's number one film, Marley and Me.

The last of the winter releases are trickling on to the home market; however, we are at the tale end of the hits and are getting the near misses now and that leaves a void in major hits at the top. I do like Deadliest Catch - Season 4, but I can't rate a featureless DVD as the DVD Pick of the Week. So that honor goes to Doubt, which is worth buying on DVD or Blu-ray. But I would go with the latter. As has become customary, this week's list has to be split into two, with the first part found here.

Pink Panther 2 may have climbed a spot to sixth place, but it is hard to be happy with its run so far. The film opened in second place in both Spain and Mexico with $1.95 million on 360 screens and $750,000 on 375 screens respectively, which is better than the film has managed in most major markets. However, overall it only managed $6.33 million on 3186 screens in 53 markets for a total of $22.26 million so far. It does open in Italy this weekend, and still has Germany, Japan, and a few other markets to go, but I can't see it turning its fortunes around at this point.

This includes a second place, $2.80 million opening on 424 screens over the weekend in the U.K., for a total of $4.14 million there. The film also held well in Russia down just 42% with $1.04 million on 415 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.41 million after two.

Recep Ivedik opened in its native Turkey and a few other markets scoring sixth place with $8.32 million on 483 screens in 4 markets. Of that total, $6.10 million was earned on 390 screens during a first place opening in its native market, which is above the pace of its predecessor. The film managed fourth place in Germany with $1.75 million on just 75 screens. An excellent start for the film.

It did ad $5.88 million on 2485 screens in 30 markets for a total of $32.11 million after a month of release. Openings this week include Germany, where the film placed second with $1.62 million on 455 screens, which is a mixed debut.

The film opened in first place in Spain with $3.25 million on 397 screens and in Russia with $2.02 million on 520 screens. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Italy ($2.31 million on 394 screens) and in France ($2.17 million on 450). As for holdovers, the film fell from first to third in Germany, but still added $2.44 million on 695 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.39 million after two.

Valkyrie started its international run this weekend scoring first place with $12.85 million on 2089 screens in 13 markets for a total of $14.16 million. Its best market was Germany, no real surprise there given its setting, where it made $3.65 million on 689 screens. The film earned second place in both the U.K. with $2.54 million on 450 screens and in South Korea with $1.47 million on 479 screens over the weekend and $1.90 million.

It seems Martin Luther King long weekend has resulted in a couple delays for international numbers and we are reduced to using studio estimated for a few things. However, we do know Seven Pounds climbed into first place with $20.60 million on 3502 screens in 25 markets and now has $41.64 million after a month of release internationally. This includes Spain where the film managed first place with $4.19 million on 322 screens over the weekend. The film had to settle for second place in the U.K. with $2.30 million on 402 screens and in France with $3.22 million on 344 screens. It was not as successful in Russia with $531,000 on 135 screens. Meanwhile it Italy, the film remained in first place with $3.43 million on 545 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.38 million after two. At this pace, $100 million internationally is all but assured, especially taking into account the number of significant markets the film has yet to debut in.

Not only did Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa remained in first place for the third weekend in a row, and four in total, the film also managed to surpass the international total of its predecessor. It was aided by a record-breaking first place opening in Poland where the film opened with $3.22 million on 130 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.02 million. Granted, films like this tend to do very well in this market, but this is still a pleasant surprise. It was not as impressive in China with $2.43 million on 600 screens earning third place there. Holdovers were led by France, where the film added $4.50 million on 820 screens over the weekend and $38.75 million in total. Meanwhile in Italy, the film earned $3.86 million on 571 screens for a total of $29.38 million. Overall it made $31.96 million over the weekend on 6290 screens in 43 market and it now has $339.88 million internationally and $516.90 million Worldwide.

The first weekend of the year starts well with practically every film in the top five having at least something to cheer about. Overall the box office pulled in $153 million, which is 24% less than last weekend; however, it's a post-holiday weekend, so that decline is understandable. Compared to the first weekend of 2008, 2009 is off to a great start up just shy of 10% over last year. And more importantly, last year got off to a great start, so we are looking at a fantastic start.

Ghajini was a surprise entry in the top five as the Indian film earned $12.85 million on 1347 screens in 22 markets, which is more than enough to be considered a monster hit. In fact, it set records in its native market and could break the record set by Dhoom 2 worldwide.

Marley & Me has taken the box office crown for a second straight weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
With no wide openers, the top seven movies have all remained in the same order they enjoyed last weekend, and overall performances were remarkably similar across the board.
Yes Man did best among the top five, down just 17%, while Slumdog Millionaire moved back into the top 10 and increased its box office by 10% while playing in basically the same number of theaters as it had over Christmas weekend.

As is customary for the first weekend of the year, there are no new releases to deal with. However, there are plenty of high profile holdovers to entertain moviegoers, including several that at least have a shot at reaching $100 million before they leave theaters. In fact, every film in the top five has at least a shot at reaching that milestone.

Not every film lived up to expectations over the weekend, but more than enough did that we can safely say 2008 ended on a high note. Over the past three days, the box office pulled in $201 million, which was more than double last week's haul of $90 million. It was also close to 8% better than the same weekend last year, however, that's not enough for 2008 to recover, and it is still almost 1% behind last year's pace $9.55 billion to $9.63 billion. Ticket sales were off by more than 5%, which is the second worst decline in more than a decade. That said, nearly $10 billion in ticket sales is still huge, and as long as production budgets don't get out of hand, the industry is healthy.

Fox emerged from the Christmas holiday weekend victorious thanks to an impressive opening by Marley & Me, which opened with an estimated $14.675 million on Christmas Day (an all-time record Christmas Day opening) and finished the weekend with $51.675 million, including $37 million over the three-day weekend Friday-Sunday.
Studio estimates gave second and third places to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Bedtime Stories, which both also broke the previous record for biggest Christmas Day opening.
Bedtime Stories finished the weekend with $38.6 million in total earnings and Button finished with $39 million.
The two movies traded second and third spots through the long weekend, and we'll only know which movie finished top once we have final numbers on Monday.

There are five films opening wide tomorrow, as well as a limited release expanding into more than 1000 theaters, which could be enough to propel it into the top ten. Given the weak new releases for the past few weeks, there is a chance all five wide releases will place in the top five, while it is unlikely any will bomb completely (even the two saddled with negative buzz). Compared to last Christmas, the box office could see some growth, which will help the year end on a positive note.

For the second weekend in a row, all three wide releases missed expectations, and unlike last week, the holdovers were not able to compensate. This caused the overall box office to slip to just $89 million; that's down 3% from last weekend, and more troubling, 44% from the same weekend last year. This two-week slump has been so bad that 2008 has lost its lead vs. 2007 and is now behind $9.25 billion to $9.23 billion. Unacceptable. If the Christmas releases are not stellar, we will see a decline in the yearly number for the first time in three years, while we are nearly guaranteed to see a drop in ticket sales for the fifth time in six years.

Jim Carrey and Will Smith last squared off in movie theaters back in 2001.
Back then, Smith scored the knockout blow as Ali opened with $14.7 million, while The Majestic could only manage an anemic $4.9 million.
This time around, Carrey looks like the victor, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
Sony reports a $16 million opening for Seven Pounds -- a decent, but hardly impressive debut -- while Warner Bros. picked up a $18.16 million opening weekend for Yes Man.
Neither result is particularly inspiring, however, and both movies missed our Friday predictions.

We end the year with a winning streak, one that will hopefully continue right through the New Year holiday. It seems nearly every film released this month is either an Oscar contender or a potential $100 million hit. Sometimes both. If all six films with box office potentials of $100 million or more reach that milestone, and Bolt and Four Christmases have the legs to make it there as well, we could set the record for most $100 million released in a single year. (It is currently at 29 films set in 2003.)
