International Details - Bride Wars as Bridesmaid
February 15, 2009
The top five on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.
Bride Wars continues its bridesmaid run just missing the top five this week after just missing the top ten last week. It did ad $5.88 million on 2485 screens in 30 markets for a total of $32.11 million after a month of release. Openings this week include Germany, where the film placed second with $1.62 million on 455 screens, which is a mixed debut.
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opened in Russia and Mexico scoring second in the former with $1.54 million on 332 screens and third in the latter with 743,000 on 250. Overall it earned $5.52 million on 1530 screens in 42 markets this week for a total of $17.15 million, with openings in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, and other markets still ahead.
- Yes Man fell from fourth to eighth with $5.51 million on 2497 screens in 51 markets for a total of $108.43 million. The film had no new openings this week, and no million dollar markets, but it has yet to debut in Germany, Japan, and a few other markets, and with over $200 million worldwide, it is still a solid hit for Jim Carrey.
- Twilight dipped to ninth place with $5.41 million on 2339 screens in 38 markets for a total of $177.40 million. It opened in third place in Denmark with $252,000 on 50 screens over the weekend and $297,000 in total, but for the most part had to rely on holdovers.
- LOL opened in third place in its native France with $4.57 million on 430 screens, while internationally it managed 10th place with $5.41 million on 447 screens in 3 markets.
- Seven Pounds fell from fifth place to eleventh with $5.27 million on 2559 screens in 40 markets for a total of $79.44 million. Its biggest opening came from South Korea where it managed just sixth place with $678,000 on 230 screens over the weekend for a total of $816,000.
- Ex opened in first place in Italy and 12th place internationally with $4.65 million on 571 screens.
- Twentieth Century Boys 2 remained in first place in Japan with $3.81 million on 374 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.60 million after two. However, it fell 45%, which is very high for that market.
- Beverly Hills Chihuahua shot up to 14th place with $3.68 million on 1163 screens in 14 markets for a total of $34.74 million. The film opened in second place in Spain with $2.40 million on 300 screens, which is better than its average so far on the international scene. However, the film has done poorly internationally compared to its domestic run. That said, it still has openings in France, Russia, Germany, and Japan, and it may turn things around before it is done.
- Red Cliff 2 earned $3.44 million on 1332 screens in 7 markets for a total of $60.42 million. This is about half of what the original made, but this one still has plenty of markets ahead of it.
- He's Just Not That Into You made its international debut in 16th place with $3.15 million on 460 screens in 4 markets. Most of this came from the U.K. where it opened in second place with $2.84 million on 375 screens. It opened in a number of international markets this weekend, and thanks to Valentine's Day, it might have reached the top five.
- Doubt climbed 10 spots to 17th with $2.64 million on 904 screens in 29 markets for a total of $7.27 million. The film is dealing for most limited or semi-wide openings, which is typical for this type of film. One of its bigger openings came from the U.K., where it only managed 10th place with $376,000 on 145 screens. It managed better than that in its sophomore stint in both Spain ($606,000 on 128 screens for a total of $1.70 million) and in Italy ($527,000 on 155 screens for a total of $1.46 million).
- Changeling climbed to 18th place with $2.43 million on 1244 screens in 44 markets for a total of $55.01 million. It opened in Australia during the past weekend with $656,000 on 132 screens over the weekend and $686,000 in total, but that was only enough for fourth place.
- No new major openings hurt Inkheart, as it fell to 19th place with $2.35 million on 2061 screens in 19 markets for a total of $29.62 million. The film isn't done yet, but while it will match its production budget worldwide, I don't think the studio will be interested in a sequel.
- Hotel For Dogs returned to the top 30 in 20th place with $2.32 million on 1102 screens in 13 markets for a total of $10.03 million. The film opened in Germany this past weekend, but struggled landing in seventh place with $899,000 on 251 screens.
- Bedtime Stories remained in 21st place thanks to a number of openings in smaller markets. Markets like Turkey, where it made $247,000 on 79 screens. Overall it made $2.27 million on 1765 screens in 29 markets for a total of $83.59 million.
- Mamma Mia! fell 43% during its second weekend in Japan, which is very high for that market, but it still added $2.17 million on 342 screens over the weekend. That gives the film $11.02 million in that markets, $430.21 million internationally, and $574.34 million worldwide.
- Marine Boy opened in first place in South Korea and 23rd place internationally with $2.06 million on 387 screens over the weekend and $2.41 million in total.
- Transporter 3 opened in third place in Australia with $773,000 on 186 screens, which was a mixed result. That was enough to lift the film into 24th place with $2.02 million on 1114 screens in 16 markets for a total $59.78 million internationally.
- Australia collapsed down more than 50% to $2.02 million on 2038 screens in 14 markets for a total of $142.20 million. It still has a couple major markets left to open it, and it could still hit $200 million worldwide.
- Italians slipped to second place in Italy and fell to 26th place internationally with $1.95 million on 437 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.68 million after three.
- Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa nearly fell out of the top 30 with $1.77 million on 2312 screens in 36 markets for a total of $398.66 million internationally and $578.26 million worldwide.
- Role Models added $1.68 million on 858 screens in 17 markets for a total of $17.55 million. This includes an opening in France, but the film bombed in that market earning just $196,000 on 110 screens.
- Look for a Star evaporated this week down 68% to $1.52 million on 331 screens in 3 markets for a total of $11.51 million.
- The Musketeers Return opened in 30th place with $1.50 million on 554 screens in 3 markets, more than 90% of which came from its native Russia, where it managed fourth place with $1.37 million on 505 screens.
Coraline started its international run off last weekend, but just missed the top 30 with $1.37 million on 430 screens in 3 markets, including $1.30 million on 399 screens during its first place opening in Mexico. Other sub 30 releases of note including High School Musical 3, which nearly returned to the top 30 with $1.34 million on 216 screens in 14 markets, $1.22 million on which came from the film's fifth place debut in Japan. Finally, Quantum of Solace reached $400 million internationally since last weekend and now has $401.56 million internationally and $570.93 million worldwide.
