Theater counts: Barbie adds theaters as it cruises into its second weekend
July 27, 2023
After opening as the second-widest release last week, Barbie stands alone atop this week’s list of widest releases. The larger half of the duo known as “Barbenheimer” scored a whopping $162 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of over $237 million. While the opening weekend rush might be over, the Greta Gerwig directed feature looks to have another big weekend at the box office as the film adds 94 locations to its opening count of 4,243 cinemas, becoming available in 4,337 theaters this week. Last week wasn’t solely about Barbie however, as Oppenheimer gladly took home its fair share from the weekend, with domestic earnings of $82.45 million. Oppenheimer starts its second week in 3,647 locations.
Up new this week is the latest from Walt Disney in the horror-comedy, Haunted Mansion. Debuting in 3,740 cinemas, the film is an adaptation of the popular Disneyland theme park ride, and the second film to be based on the ride (following the 2003 feature with the same name). Directed by Justin Simien, the film follows a single mother and her son who move into a mansion, only to realize it’s haunted. Haunted Mansion stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito among others.
Also opening in wide release this week is the Australian supernatural horror Talk to Me. Beginning its theatrical run in approximately 1,900 movie houses, the film follows a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, until things get out of control and one of them unwittingly unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. The movie is directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou.
Rounding out the top five this week is $134-million-earner Sound of Freedom, which adds up 126 more theaters this week, clocking in with 3,411. Lastly, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, is still available in 3,191 venues after taking in over $126 million in 17-days from North American theaters.
Also notable this week is The First Slam Dunk, which will be playing in approximately 550 theaters, we hear from GKIDS. It had fantastic runs in China and Japan to become the fifth-highest-grossing anime film of all time already.
Next week we will see another midweek opening for a Paramount Pictures film as everyone’s favorite pizza-loving superheroes are back on the big screen with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The animated movie contains a host of big-name talents lending their voice to the latest in this iconic franchise. The movie will arrive in approximately 3,600 locations starting Wednesday, August 2. Arriving on Friday is the follow-up feature to 2018’s The Meg with The Meg 2: The Trench. The sequel is expected to make its way into about 3,800 locations.
