Theater counts: Fantastic Beasts becomes widest release, edging out three newcomers
April 21, 2022
It should be a fun-filled weekend for moviegoers as not only are there plenty of indie films hitting theaters but we also see three new wide releases arrive on North American soil, joining last week’s box office leaders Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. After amassing over $200 million in its first two weeks, the former drops two spots on the theater count chart this week, showing in 3,809 theaters, while the latter adds cinemas, coming in at 4,245 locations and becoming this week’s widest release.
The largest of the new releases this week is the latest animated feature from Universal Pictures in The Bad Guys. The film, which opened in most parts of the world last month finally arrives domestically in 4,008 theaters after earning $54 million overseas. Pierre Perifel directs from a screenplay by Etan Cohen and the film stars a seasoned voice cast including Sam Rockwell, Craig Robinson and Awkwafina among others. Also opening wide this week is the historical Viking drama, The Northman, starring Alexander Skarsgård as Viking warrior prince, Amleth. Co-starring alongside Skarsgård in the 9th-Century epic are the accomplished talents of Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Bjork and Willem Dafoe. The film, which is directed by Robert Eggers, launches in 3,231 locations. Lastly, releasing this week is the Nicolas Cage action-comedy film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The film stars Cage as a fictionalized version of himself, and arrives in 3,036 locations.
Opening in limited release this week is Y Como Es El. The Mexican comedy follows a mild-mannered man named Tomás, who goes to Puerto Vallarta to confront the cabdriver having an affair with his wife, only to end up driving back to Mexico City with him. Y Como Es El arrives in 325 locations. Also opening in limited release this week is Filmrise’ Marvelous and the Black Hole. The comedy feature starring Rhea Perlman and Miya Cech shows in seven theaters across North America. Lastly, showing in two locations this weekend is another comedy, this one based on a true story, The Duke. The 1960s film set in London stars veteran actors Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren and is directed by Roger Michell.
