Synopsis

Prep school English teacher Jack Marcus laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his spare time with drink versus the art of language. He meets his match in Dina Delsanto—an abstract painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish. With a performance review looming and his teaching job on the line, Jack hatches an inspired plan for galvanizing student interest in their studies: he declares a war between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter. Dina and her art students accept the challenge between Jack and his English students, and the battle lines are drawn.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 9th, 2014

September 9th, 2014

The Christmas shopping season has begun in full force. Even if Captain America: The Winter Soldier were the only new release this week, it would be a great release, as the Combo Packs are clearly pick of the week contenders. It's not the only Pick of the Week contender. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 1 is also a prime contender, although I'm still waiting for the screener for that release. At the moment, I'm giving the win to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but when I get a chance to review the screener, that might change. More...

Per Theater Chart: Boyhood has Extended Childhood

July 23rd, 2014

Boyhood poster

The biggest film on the per theater chart this weekend was Boyhood, for the second weekend in a row. It expanded from 5 to 34 theaters, but its average fell just 56% to $34,418. That's fantastic. It has already earned a measure of mainstream success, while it has its eyes on Chef for best limited release for the summer. Second place went to There's No Place Like Utopia with $30,710 in one theater. This is a great start, but there are still no reviews, so I think it will have short legs. A Five Star Life and Mood Indigo were relatively close with averages of $15,996 and $13,256 respectively. The only wide release to reach the $10,000 club was The Purge: Anarchy, which earned an average of $10,626. More...

Per Theater Chart: Jumping over the Competition

June 18th, 2014

22 Jump Street poster

There were three films in the $10,000 club, including the top two on the overall chart. 22 Jump Street led the way with an average of $17,263. The Rover was wedged between the two wide releases with an average of $13,860 in five theaters. Next up was How to Train Your Dragon 2 with an average of $11,627. This is good, but lower than expected. More...

Weekend Estimates: Maleficent Magnificent

June 1st, 2014

Maleficent poster

Disney’s $180 million gamble on Maleficent looks to have paid off this weekend, with Angelina Jolie’s starring role carrying the film to a $70 million opening weekend, in spite of middling reviews. The film is as much a triumph for Jolie as World War Z was for husband Brad Pitt. They truly are Hollywood’s power couple. More...

Per Theater Chart: The Full Picture

May 28th, 2014

Words and Pictures poster

There were only two films in the $10,000 club this weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past led the way with an average of $22,729 in nearly 4,000 theaters. The only other film was The Dance of Reality with an average of $12,384 in two theaters. However, if one were to include holiday Monday, Words and Pictures would also reach the $10,000 club with an average of $11,544 in ten theaters. More...

Weekend Estimates: X-Men Joins 2014 $90 Million Club

May 25th, 2014

X-Men: Days of Future Past poster

Another weekend, another $90 million opener. This time, there’s an asterisk at least, because X-Men: Days of Future Past will “open” with $110 million, thanks to the four day Memorial Day long weekend, giving Fox an arguable claim to the biggest weekend of the year, and the first $100 million debut. The reality, however, is that it will line up in fourth place when comparing 3-day weekends, with Captain America still out in front, thanks to its $95 million opening back in April. May has seen the three other $90 million-plus weekends, with Godzilla second ($93 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 third ($91.6 million). More...

Limited Releases: Talking Pictures

May 23rd, 2014

Words and Pictures poster

It is not a particularly strong week for limited releases. There are a few that are earning good reviews, but almost none are earning good reviews and any buzz. Cold in July is one of the exceptions and its reviews and star power could have resulted in a fast start, but it is also playing on Video on Demand. More...

More...

More...

More...
