Synopsis

When Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with the enigmatic Angelica, he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the "Queen Anne’s Revenge," the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard, Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past.

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

Blu-ray Sales: Top of the Chart Looks Super

December 8th, 2011

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 and Super 8 had legitimate claim to top spot in this week's Blu-ray sales chart. The holdover sold more units at 550,000 units to 503,000 units, but the newcomer led the way in revenue at $11.49 million to $9.89 million. That represented an opening week Blu-ray ratio of 55%, which should make the studio happy. Also of note this week, the final Harry Potter release became the best selling Blu-ray of the year with 3.95 million units sold and $86.16 million in total revenue so far. More...

DVD Sales: Harry Potter Stays Ahead of Duo of DVD Debuts

November 30th, 2011

New releases this week were a little strange. While there were two massive releases, both were in fact released on Blu-ray a month ago. The weak new releases helped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 lead the way on the DVD sales chart selling 2.38 million units, while generating $35.57 million in revenue. After just two weeks of release, the film has sold 5.21 million units and generated $77.79 million in revenue, placing it third for the year. More...

Blu-ray Sales: High Definition Reaches New Heights

November 23rd, 2011

It was a record-breaking week on Blu-ray as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 made its debut on the home market. That film crushed competition selling 2.71 million units / $60.75 million during its debut, which is even more impressive, as it was released on Friday and not Tuesday. By comparison, Avatar sold 2.55 million units and generated $52.80 million during its debut. (It was also a Friday release, so the comparisons are valid.) Its opening Blu-ray ratio was 49%, which is a little lower than some first run releases have earned. However, I think some of the people who are most likely to buy the films on high definition would either grab the Box Set, or perhaps are waiting for next year's Uber collection. Even without taking into account the box set numbers, the film is instantly in seventh place on the all time chart and, by this time next week, it should be in second place. (It will be a while before Avatar is dethroned). More...

Blu-ray Sales: The Checkered Flag goes to Cars Too

November 16th, 2011

Not only did Cars 2 lead the way on the DVD sales chart, it led the way on the Blu-ray sales chart as well. It dominated new releases and holdovers alike, selling 1.76 million units and generating $44.57 million in opening week sales. Its opening Blu-ray ratio was 47%, which is very good for a kids movie and an unexpected boon for the format. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 15th, 2011

November 16th, 2011

It's a really soft week for releases. Granted, Harry Potter came out last week and it is likely still going to be selling quite well this week. But the best release of Tuesday, at least according to Amazon.com, is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on DVD. Normally this would be a huge release, but it came out on Blu-ray weeks ago. The same is true of the second best selling release, The Lion King. The most of the next several best selling releases are Blu-ray catalog titles. Granted, many are worth picking up, but it could still be a really slow week in terms of overall sales. That doesn't mean it is a slow week in terms of high quality releases. West Side Story is coming out on Blu-ray, My Fair Lady is also making its Blu-ray debut. There are several more catalogue titles getting a Blu-ray double-dip, like Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition, or the latest Blu-ray for Metropolis. TV on DVD is well represented with Farscape: The Complete Series (Blu-ray), Being Human: Season One on Blu-ray, and Awkward: Season One. Beginners on Blu-ray is also a Contender for Pick of the Week, as is Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume One: Blu-ray Ultimate Collector's Edition. In the end I went with Evil Dead II: 25th Anniversary Edition. It is a double-dip, but there are major improvements over the previous release, plus it is a bargain price at just $11, and given the number of prime releases coming out this week, a bargain price is certainly welcome. Blu-ray Sales: Capping Off a Great Run

November 10th, 2011

Captain America: The First Avenger led all new releases earning first place on the Blu-ray sales chart by a similar margin to its victory on the DVD sales chart. It sold 1.54 million units and generated $40.08 million in opening week sales. Its Blu-ray ratio was a stunning 68%. More...

Blu-ray Sales: Strange Week on the Home Market

November 2nd, 2011

While the new releases were terrible on DVD, the Blu-ray sales chart was incredibly active thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. This film sold 1.71 million units and generated $48.50 million in opening week sales; however, the DVD only release doesn't come out till the 15th of November, so it is not quite fair to compare this result to other concurrent Blu-ray sales. That said, the strategy appears to have worked. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 18th, 2011

October 18th, 2011

It should be a relatively good week in terms of DVD and Blu-ray sales with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides leading the way. However, it's not a particularly deep week in terms of home market releases. Nor is it really strong when it comes to contenders for Pick of the Week. Degrassi: Season Ten is in competition, but in the end I went with Robotech: The Complete Series. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

October 16th, 2011

I've reviewed all three of the previous Pirates of the Caribbean films. I thought the first film was surprisingly good, the second film tried too hard to be epic, while the third film was a big popcorn flick, nothing more. Expectations for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides are not extremely high. I'm not expecting it to be as good as the first film. All I'm looking for is a fun ride. Can it deliver? More...

International Box Office: Harry Potter's Record-Breaking Ways Extended Overseas

July 20th, 2011

It seems every day we have another broken record to report on. The final international numbers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2's opening weekend came in, mostly, and the film earned $264.32 million on 17,539 screens in 58 markets for a total opening of $323.38 million internationally and $492.57 million worldwide. Needless to say, this is the biggest international and worldwide opening ever. To put this into perspective, not counting the fellow Harry Potter films, this is already the tenth best Warner Bros. movie of all time. (With this franchise and Christpher Nolan's Batman franchises ending, there's got to be someone at the studio is full panic mode. They might have an entire division of people whose sole job is to panic 24 hours a day.) The only small downside for the film is its per screen average, which didn't lead the international chart, but more on that in a bit. More...

International Box Office: Transformers Hold Top Spot with Plenty of Milestones Below

July 13th, 2011

Transformers: Dark of the Moon repeated as champion on the international stage with $94.70 million on 11,222 screens in 58 markets for a total of $386.43 million internationally and $647.51 million worldwide. At this pace, by this weekend it will be ahead of Transformers and will have no trouble becoming the biggest hit in the franchise. As for individual markets, it earned the most in South Korea where it was down just 31% to $15.11 million on 1,301 screens over the weekend for a total of $54.47 million after two. It became the fastest film to reach $50 million in that market. It wasn't able to hold on as well in the U.K. down 56% to $7.58 million on 522 screens over the weekend for a total of $31.45 million after two. In Australia it was down 43%, which at first glance seems strong, but it was a holiday weekend in that market and half the films in the top five saw growth. It still added $7.52 million on 596 screens over the weekend for a running tally of $29.13 million, which is stronger than its performance, given the relative size of the two markets. The film fell 56% in Russia, which isn't bad compared to the average drop-off in that market. It managed $7.47 million on 1,385 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $36.03 million. International Box Office: Transformers Tops, Pirates Earns its Billion

July 6th, 2011

Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned top spot on the international chart, which came as no surprise. However, it did so in impressive fashion with $154.93 million on 11,565 screens in 58 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $219.81 million. This is the best international debut for Paramount topping the previous champion, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Its biggest opening came in South Korea where it scored $21.82 million on 1,442 screens over the weekend for a total opening of 31.09 million. It was also tops in Russia with $16.95 million on 1,385 screens over the weekend and $21.97 million in total. It earned $17.30 million on 521 screens in the U.K. and $16.18 million on 595 in Australia, including midweek numbers. It also cracked $10 million in Germany with $15.29 million on 617, including midweek numbers, and in Mexico with $10.81 million on 2,097 screens. More...

International Box Office: Cars Cuts Off Panda to Take Checkered Flag

June 29th, 2011

In a battle of digitally animated sequels, Cars 2 came out on top with $39.23 million on 4,873 screens in 25 markets for a total opening of $43.98 million. Its best market was Russia where it opened in first place with $9.42 million on 950 screens. By comparison, the original Cars made $4 million in that market, in total. The film was also very strong in Mexico with $8.08 million on 1,981 screens and in Brazil with $5.29 million on 747 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.04 million. The film had to deal with direct competition in Australia, but still came out on top with $5.13 million. The final major market it debuted in was Italy, where it earned $3.86 million on 834 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.71 million. Overall, the film more than doubled the debuts of Cars in the markets it opened in, while it was on par with Toys 3's openings. Granted, it likely won't have the same legs, but this is still a great start. More...

International Box Office: Kung Fu Fights Past Another Milestone

June 22nd, 2011

Kung Fu Panda 2 remained in top spot on the international chart with $58.16 million on 11,244 screens in 54 markets for totals of $284.22 million internationally and $427.89 million worldwide. The film opened in France and Germany with nearly identical results with $6.91 million on 725 screens in the former and $6.91 million on 699 screens in the latter. (The result in Germany does include some previews.) So far the film has made an estimated $77 million in China, which is by far the film's biggest market. More...

International Box Office: Panda Doesn't Pull Any Punches

June 15th, 2011

Kung Fu Panda 2 climbed into top spot on the international chart after three weeks of release, earning $56.72 million on 11,867 screens in 45 markets for a total of $206.11 million internationally and $332.92 million worldwide. This past weekend the film debuted in a number of major markets, led by the U.K. where it made $10.07 million on 514 screens, but while this was enough for first place in the market, it was less than the original made. On the other hand, it showed growth in Mexico with $7.34 million on 1,841 screens over the weekend and a total opening of $14.69 million, and in Brazil with $4.79 million on 714 screens over the weekend and $5.18 million in total. The film opens in France and Germany next weekend and Japan and Italy in August, so it still has quite a way to go before its international run is over. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Super Surpasses Most Predictions

June 13th, 2011

Nearly every film in the top five beat Thursday's predictions, and the one film that didn't landed within a rounding error of doing so. This helped the overall box office reach $138 million for the weekend, but while this was better than expected, it was still 14% lower than last weekend and 9% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2011 is behind 2010 by 7% at $4.43 billion to $4.76 billion, but this is better than it has been for the majority of the year. More...

Weekend Predictions: How Super Will Super Be?

June 9th, 2011

After X-Men: First Class opened on the low end of expectations last weekend, it is even more important that Super 8 carries its weight this weekend if 2011 is to continue its winning ways. Even if Super 8 does land on the high end of expectations, it might not be enough, as this weekend last year saw the release of The Karate Kid, which was a surprise hit that opened with $55 million. International Box Office: Stranger Tides Sweeps Away More Records

June 8th, 2011

I think it is not unfair to call Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides a disappointment domestically, as it seems very likely that it won't match its hefty production budget, while it is practically guaranteed it will be the weakest installment in the franchise. On the other hand, the film is breaking records internationally. This weekend it tied the record for the fastest film to reach $600 million internationally, which was previously set by Avatar at just 19 days. It also became the fastest to reach $700 million worldwide at 16 days. This weekend its haul was down to $70.78 million on 15,962 screens in 69 markets for a total of $601.58 million internationally and $791.78 million worldwide, but that was enough to earn first place for the third weekend in a row. The film's biggest market of the weekend was Japan where it made $8.63 million on 802 screens, giving it a total of $62.75 million after just three weeks of release. More...

Weekend Wrap-up: First Place for First Class, But Will It Last?

June 6th, 2011

It wasn't exactly a disappointing weekend at the box office, but we did see the overall box office fall closer to the low end of expectations. With $160 million over the weekend, the box office was down 28% from the Friday-through-Sunday portion of the Memorial Day long weekend. However, it was up 24% from this weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2011 now has pulled in $4.23 billion, compared to $4.55 billion for last year. 2011 is still in a massive hole, but at least there's a chance we can close the gap, while reaching $10 billion in total for the year has become a lot more likely. More...

Weekend Predictions: Will X-Men's Latest Offering be Top of the Class?

June 2nd, 2011

After a record-breaking Memorial Day long weekend, the industry is hoping to maintain that momentum throughout the summer. There's only one wide release to deal with this weekend, X-Men: First Class, but most analysts expect it to earn more than the four wide releases earned in total this weekend last year. Add in stronger holdovers, and every indication says there should be a solid win for 2011 in the year-over-year comparison. More...

International Box Office: Two plus Two can't top Four

June 2nd, 2011

The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides, held off a pair of sequels on the international chart with $122.8 million on 18,000 screens in 65 markets for a total of $470.8 million internationally and $623.7 million worldwide. It tied the record for fastest film to reach $600 million worldwide, which was previously set by At World's End at 12 days. Its biggest single market of the weekend was Japan, where it was down just 8% from its opening weekend with $13.75 million on 800 screens over the weekend for a total of $44.57 million after two. It also cracked $10 million in Germany ($11.16 million on 820 screens for a total of $35.26 million) and in Russia ($10.62 million on 1716 screens over a total of 49.87 million). At this pace, it is likely that the film has already topped the final figure for Curse of the Black Pearl, while $600 million internationally and $900 million worldwide is not out of the question. Weekend Wrap-Up: A Memorial Day To Remember?

May 31st, 2011

Records were broken on Memorial Day long weekend, which makes the weekend one to remember. Ironic then that the biggest hit of the weekend was a film about people who can't remember the night before. Yes, The Hangover 2 easily took top spot, while Kung Fu Panda 2 was disappointingly far behind. On the other hand, it still earned more than last year's number one film, Shrek Forever After, so it at least pulled its weight. Overall, the three-day box office was a very healthy $223 million, or 33% more than last weekend and 47% more than the same weekend last year. Over four days, the box office pulled in $277 million, or 44% more than last year. Those figures were both records for biggest Memorial Day long weekend ever, crushing 2007's offering by $22 million. Year-to-date, 2011 now has $4.02 billion and has cut the gap with 2010 to just over 8% at $4.38 billion. If the rest of the summer is as strong as May was, we could be in good shape going into the fall. More...

Weekend Predictions: Two by Two

May 26th, 2011

It's Memorial Day long weekend, which is one of the most important weekends of the year. Not only is it one of the most lucrative, but it can help set the tone for the rest of summer. 30 million people going to theaters, each seeing countless posters, trailers, etc. for upcoming releases is a boon for the marketing for those film. This is why when both new releases failed to make an impact last year, it was such a devastating result. This time around, there are two sequels opening, Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Hangover 2, both of which should earn more individually than Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia earned combined. There's a slim chance one will dominate the other, but in that case, the overall box office should still be a large step up from last year. But the best case scenario has both of them becoming monster hits, and that would have a positive effect on the rest of the box office for weeks to come. More...

International Box Office: Pirates Sink Competition, Plunder Box Office

May 25th, 2011

While Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened on the low end of expectations domestically, it broke records internationally with $222.03 million on 18,210 screens in 65 markets over the weekend for a total opening of $260.43 million. This is the largest ever international opening, and adding in its domestic debut, the film has $350.58 million worldwide. Its biggest single market was Russia, surprisingly, with $26.75 million on 1,716 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $31.42 million. That's more than At World's End earned in that market in total. The film also reportedly earned $20 million during its debut in China, but further details are not available. More...

IMAX: Strange Tide Rises to New Heights on IMAX

May 24th, 2011

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides broke records on IMAX including the widest global release of all time. Domestically it made $8.2 million on 256 screens for an average of $32,000. Meanwhile, it made $8.3 million on just 138 screens internationally for an average of $61,000. It's highest grossing single theater was IMAX Kinosfera in Moscow, which pulled in a mind-blowing $240,000, while it earned $100,000 in 15 different theaters internationally, mostly in Russia and the CIS states. Per Theater Chart: Midnight Burns Bright

May 24th, 2011

Midnight in Paris had the best per screen average for the year so far and came within a rounding error of topping $100,000. The film opened with $599,003 in 6 theaters for an average of $99,834, which represents a career best for Woody Allen. Add in its Oscar-worthy reviews, and there's no telling where it could go. The overall number one film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was the only other film to crack $10,000 on the per theater chart, as it opened with an average of $21,697. More...

Pirates Pillage the Box Office

May 23rd, 2011

We had a reason to celebrate this weekend as On Stranger Tides had the best opening of any film so far in 2011, even if it was a little weaker than expected. This helped the overall box office grow nearly 20% from last weekend to $167 million, which is 12% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2011 is still behind 2010 by $3.65 billion to $4.13 billion, but the gap is down to 11.6% and the box office is moving in the right direction. More...

Weekend Estimates: Pirates More Errr Than Arrr

May 22nd, 2011

While a $90 million opening is nothing to sniff at, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will most likely become, briefly, 2011's top-grossing movie, the film's performance puts Disney in an interesting position. On the one hand, its international performance so far has been impressive, and there's a good chance it will end with $700 million or so outside North America. That alone will make it a highly-profitable movie. But domestically it will most likely top out around $250 million, which won't take much of a chunk out of its estimated $250 million production budget, and home video sales are unlikely to come anywhere near the kind of numbers posted by previous movies in the franchise. So from a purely domestic perspective, it would be tempting to scale back or retire the franchise. But the international demand clearly suggests it has some life yet. More...

Weekend Predictions: Will a Strange Tide Lift the Box Office?

May 19th, 2011

Not to put too fine a point on it, but so far 2011 has been a terrible year at the box office. Granted, the past month or so have been better, but if we were to extrapolate the total box office based on how we've done so far, we'd have the worst year in a decade in terms of dollars, and way longer than that in terms of tickets sold. This really should change this weekend with the release of On Stranger Tides, which should earn more than Shrek Forever After, last year's number one film, with relative ease. In fact, it might earn more than the top five combined did last year. More...

Contest: Look Lively

May 13th, 2011

There's only one wide release next week and only one prize in this week's box office prediction contest. However, they are both huge. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides should have the biggest opening of the year so far, and could end up with the biggest opening weekend of 2011. Meanwhile, the prize is a 22-disc TV on DVD Megaset from Kids in the Hall. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), regardless of whether they go over or not, will win a copy of Kids in the Hall: The Complete Series Megaset on DVD. (This is the new version that includes Death Comes To Town.) Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2011 Preview: May

May 1st, 2011

Summer is officially upon us and after a depressing start to the year, we finally have some reason to be optimistic. April produced a few films that were stronger than expected and the last three weekends have produced wins in the year-over-year comparison. Granted, 2011 is a long way from matching 2010's pace, but if we can earn a few more wins this month, we could be in good shape going forward. In comparison with last May, the month starts off slowly this year, but comes on really strong by the end and looks much healthier overall. In fact, last May there were only three films to make more than $100 million at the box office. (Granted, two others came very close.) This year there are four films that might open with more than $100 million. Right now 2010 has about a $500 million lead on 2011, but hopefully by the end of the month that lead will be down to $300 million. More...

More...

More...

More...

More...
