The Fantastic Four: First Steps soared out of the gate with an impressive $118 million haul at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, cementing its status as a summer blockbuster heavyweight. The reboot’s strong debut gave Marvel’s first family a commanding lead, but the road ahead isn’t without obstacles. This weekend brings fresh competition in the form of The Naked Gun, a slapstick revival aiming to tickle audiences, and The Bad Guys 2, the animated sequel with a loyal following and plenty of momentum. With these newcomers entering the fray, The Fantastic Four will need to hold its ground to stay on top of the box office charts.

It is a very busy week on the home market with four wide releases, five if you count Spring Breakers, which expanded semi-wide during its second weekend of release. None of these films were big hits at the box office. In fact, the five of them combined made $122 million. Additionally, only one of them earned good reviews. Fortunately, not only did Spring Breakers earn good reviews, its DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack are loaded, enough to be a contender for Pick of the Week. The other main contender is The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for the screener for both of those releases, and I hate handing out the Pick of the Week when the screener is on its way. Because of that, I'm going with a late review, Wilfred: Season Two on DVD or Blu-ray.

It's an abridged list of DVD and Blu-ray releases report this week due to technical difficulties. The best selling new release of the week is True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray Combo Pack, which is certainly worth owning for fans. However, the best releases are the Hayao Miyazaki Double-Shot, Howl's Moving Castle on Blu-ray Combo Pack and My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray Combo Pack. Most prefer the former, but I prefer the latter.

The Bouquet is a Canadian film that has the Dove Foundation seal of approval, which certainly sets up some expectations. It is certified Family Approved, but this usually comes at a cost of any edge. Perhaps this film will rise above expectations. Or perhaps its appeal will be limited to families looking for light entertainment.
