Holiday theater counts: Wicked continues its reign as Zootopia 2 enters the arena

Wicked: For Good

It looks to be a fun Thanksgiving holiday at the domestic box office with two blockbuster films going head-to-head. Four-day reigning champ, Wicked: For Good racked up an impressive $147 million in its debut this past weekend, unsurprisingly taking the top spot at the box office. Last year’s Thanksgiving releases had Moana 2 showing up midweek to ruin Wicked’s party. Can Zootopia 2 play the spoiler once again for the animated features?

Zootopia 2 brings back detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, who are once again partners in the police force, but their working relationship is under strain. Their personalities and different approaches lead to friction, and after a bungled smuggling case, they’re forced into a “partners-in-crisis” therapy program to rebuild trust. The original film picked up just over $75 million in its opening weekend and went on to score $341 million during its 22-week run in North America, while hauling in $677 million from international viewings. The Jared Bush and Byron Howard-directed sequel features an extremely talented voice cast headlined by Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin. Walt Disney will release Zootopia 2 in 4,000 theaters throughout North America.

Also opening in wide release on Wednesday is the romantic comedy, Eternity, starring Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner. The film follows three recently deceased people who find themselves in a metaphysical waiting space called “the Junction,” where they have a limited window—one week—to decide their eternal afterlife. The film will make its debut in 1,384 domestic locations.

Launching in 119 movie venues on Wednesday before expanding wide in December is Hamnet. The film follows William Shakespeare and his wife as their son Hamnet dies in his youth, inspiring Shakespeare to write the classic tragedy Hamlet.

Note: Due to the holiday weekend and midweek arrivals, the theater count change from last week refers to the period from Friday, November 21, to Wednesday, November 26. Those counts that remain unchanged were not reported by the studio but will be updated if they become available.
