Theater counts: Springsteen and Black Phone 2 share weekend widest release honors
October 23, 2025
Black Phone 2 dialed up a stronger-than-expected $27.33 million in its domestic debut over the weekend, knocking former chart topper Tron: Ares out of the top spot. As usual, the upcoming weekend ushers in a wave of new releases vying to carve out their place at the box office and claim the title of the nation’s number-one film.
Leading this weekend’s newcomers is the Bruce Springsteen biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere. The film dives into the making of Springsteen’s 1982 masterpiece, Nebraska, tracing his journey as a rising star torn between fame and his inner demons. Jeremy Allen White takes on the role of the rock legend, with Scott Cooper directing the drama’s rollout to 3,460 theaters across North America.
Not far behind in 3,393 locations is another newcomer, this one coming from Paramount Pictures with the release of Regretting You. The movie follows a mother and daughter who explore what’s left behind after a devastating accident reveals a shocking betrayal, forcing them to confront family secrets, redefine love, and rediscover each other. Directed by Josh Boone, the film stars Allison Williams, McKenna Grace, Dave Franco, and Mason Thames.
Just making it over the 3,000 theater threshold with 3,003 locations is Chainsaw Man—The Movie: Reze Arc. The Japanese anime action feature has already found box office success in 13 Asian markets, pulling in $68.3 million since its opening in Japan in mid-September. The movie will roll out in most major European territories, along with Australia, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, this weekend.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the supernatural horror feature, Shelby Oaks. The film follows a woman whose obsessive search for her missing sister leads her into a terrifying mystery at the hands of an unknown evil. Starting out in 1,830 movie houses, the film was funded by 14,720 backers, making it the highest-funded horror film in Kickstarter history, which suggests a devoted audience and passionate fan base.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current box office titleholder, with Black Phone 2 adding 49 locations this weekend for a total of 3,460 venues. This count makes for a rare tie for the weekend's widest release. Finally, occupying the fifth place spot is another of last weekend’s newcomers, with Good Fortune retaining its opening count of 2,990 heading into its second weekend.
Heading into the Halloween weekend, we see two wide-release films opening on Wednesday, these being the Jan Komasa-directed thriller, Anniversary, and the animated comedy, Stitch Head. The former is set to debut in approximately 750 locations. Meanwhile, on Friday, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons’ black comedy, Bugonia, will make its way into approximately 1,800 theaters. Last, but not least, everyone’s favorite time-traveling duo, Marty McFly and Doc Brown, are back for the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future. That film is expected to fly into approximately 1,900 cinemas.
