International Box Office: Zootopia Goes Global with $83.1 million

March 17, 2016

Zootopia

Zootopia rose to first place with $83.1 million in 45 markets over the weekend for totals of $288.7 million internationally and $432.7 million worldwide. The film's biggest market was China, where it grew to $59.44 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $112.83 million. It became only the second animated film to earn $100 million in China and should top Kung Fu Panda 3's record-breaking run of $151.74 million. The film opens in Brazil this weekend and the U.K. next weekend, so its run is far from over.

Speaking of Kung Fu Panda 3, it returned to the chart in second place with $28.6 million in 20 markets over the weekend for totals of $219.5 million internationally and $356.0 million worldwide. This week's new releases include the U.K., where it earned first place with $6.91 million in 583 theaters. It also opened in first place in Mexico with $4.9 million. Its market count will more than double this weekend, so it should remain potent at the international box office.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened in third place with $26.7 million in 45 markets. This is not good. Its biggest market was France, where it earned first place with $5.02 million; however, this is well below the $6.37 million Insurgent made during its opening there. Likewise, in the U.K., the franchise fell from an opening of $4.40 million to $2.66 million. Given these results, a first place opening here is in doubt.

Gods of Egypt remained in fourth place for the third weekend in a row, this time pulling in $26.4 million in 73 markets for a total of $80.5 million internationally. This is about three times more than it made domestically, but less than half as much as it will need to make internationally, if it is to break even any time soon. The film debuted in China with a $19.96 million opening, including previews.

Ip Man 3 fell from first to fifth, possibly. With reports of ghost screenings and other shenanigans, it is going to be a while before I fully trust the Chinese box office. Reportedly, the film added $13.60 million over the weekend for a running tally of $112.36 million after 11 days of release. Internationally, it has $142.5 million after two weeks of release.

Deadpool fell out of the top five, but it did cross $700 million worldwide over the weekend. Its global total of $708.1 million is more than enough to cover its combined budget, plus very likely the production budget of the sequel.
