Synopsis

When a teenage boy goes missing in a small town already devastated by a fatal mining accident, three strangers find themselves drawn together in a tangle of secrets, lies, and the collective grief of the community. Reeling from the disappearance of her son, Diane finds herself drifting away from her husband, a mining company executive whose role in the accident has made her family the prime target for the town’s anger. When she forms a dangerous bond with the sole survivor of the disaster, truths will be uncovered that threaten to tear apart the few remaining threads holding the town together in this intense drama from writer-director Sara Colangelo.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 21st, 2015

April 20th, 2015

It is another terrible week on the home market. There is only one big movie coming out this week, Taken 3, but its Tomatometer Score is in single digits. It is infinitely skippable. As for contenders for Pick of the Week, there are not a lot. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (DVD or Blu-ray) is the only real contender, while A Most Violent Year is on the list because the screener arrived late and it is the only other release that is an easy recommendation. Per Theater Chart: Sniper Expands Wide, but Still Secures Top Spot

January 21st, 2015

American Sniper poster

American Sniper expanded wide, but it still earned first place on the per theater chart with an average of $25,111 in more than 3,000 theaters. Second place went to Still Alice, which opened with an average of $17,667 in 12 theaters. Those were the only two films to reach the $10,000 club over the three-day weekend, but Ode to me Father came close enough that it probably got there over the four-day weekend. More...

Limited Release: Still Struggling to Find a Hit

January 16th, 2015

Still Alice poster

It is a really, really bad weekend to release a limited release. Not only do fans of art house cinema have a lot of films to choose from, but many of them are busy talking about the Oscar nominations, which were just announced. Even so, there are about a dozen limited releases on this week's list. I seriously doubt most of them will do well enough to make a real impact on the box office. There is one exception, as Still Alice is earning great reviews and even picked up a number of major nominations this Awards Season. More...

2014 - Awards Season: Independent Spirit Awards - Nominations

December 6th, 2014

Birdman poster

The Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced last week and I'm getting to them a little late, because I needed to organize the whole Awards Season stories. Firstly, I've decided to use the year the movies were released not the year the awards are handed out, unlike what we did last year. This means both will have 2014 as the year. Not ideal, but it is better to fix the mistake now than carry on making it. Secondly, the headlines are just going to be the name of the Awards and either nominations or winners. This will make it easier for readers to find later on. As for the Independent Spirit Awards nominations, Birdman led the way with 6 nods, while Boyhood, Nightcrawler, and Selma were right behind with 5 each.
