Synopsis

Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life - an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he's gay and he's going to live life to the fullest - even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another. Told with an uncanny sense of humor and a lot of heart, "I Love You Phillip Morris" is an oddball tale of what can happen when the legal system, a daredevil spirit and undying love collide.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 5th, 2011

April 5th, 2011

It's Tron week with at least seven releases related to Tron and Tron: Legacy. This appears to have scared away the competition, because outside of those releases, there's not much of a selection. Actually, there are three $100 million hits coming out this week; however, one doesn't come out till Friday, so I'll likely deal with it next week after the screener arrives, and the other is so bad it's best to pretend it doesn't exist. Those two films are clearly the Pick of the Week, but depending on where you buy your DVDs, the Combo Pack may or may nor be less expensive than buying the two films separately, so double-check before you buy. Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: I Love You, Philip Morris

April 3rd, 2011

A story about two men who fall in love while in prison. This was a movie that was always going to struggle to find an audience. There was some pre-release Awards Season Buzz for I Love You, Philip Morris, but then its release date was pushed back, more than once. By the time it eventually hit theaters, the buzz had died down. And while it was able to do well at the box office for a limited release, it was never able to expand truly wide. Was the early buzz exaggerated? Or was this a movie that was simply too far outside the mainstream to expand into multiplexes? More...

Per Theater Chart was Full of Win

March 30th, 2011

Seven films topped the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart this week, but leading the way were last week's top two films: Bill Cunningham New York and Win Win. The former earned $21,786 in 3 theaters while the latter was right behind with $20,192 in 23. My Perestroika earned $17,680 in its lone theater over the weekend and $25,084 since its Wednesday opening. Mia and the Migoo and Miral were neck-and-neck at $16,975 and $16,561. They also share something else, bad reviews, so their futures are in doubt. Trophy Wife earned an average of $12,288 in seven theaters. Finally, Jane Eyre made nearly $1 million over the weekend in 90 theaters for an average of $10,778. More...

Awards Season: WGA Sticks to the Letter of the Law

January 4th, 2011

WGA nominations were announced this week, and there were some strange results, as the guild is sticking to their rules, which resulted in a number of possible Oscar contenders being ruled ineligible. That said, of the non-documentary films, only one hasn't picked up a single nomination previously, so it is hard to say this list is too out there. More...

Per Theater Chart: Blue Pulls in the Green

January 4th, 2011

The final weekend of the year saw no less than six films topping the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Leading the way was Blue Valentine with an average of $48,432 over the weekend and it already has close to $300,000 in just four theaters since Wednesday. Country Strong saw its average grow to $20,753, but it was still pushed to second place due to the competition. Another Year opened in third with $18,645 in six theaters, while Somewhere remained steady with $17,302 in eight. The Illusionist grew by 20% to $15,472, but it did have an extra day, as last weekend it opened on Saturday. The final $10,000 film was The King's Speech, which earned more than $7 million in 700 theaters for an average of $11,108. More...

Black Swan Looking Bright on the Per Theater Chart

December 7th, 2010

Black Swan beat all expectations during its opening; in fact, it broke records for Fox Searchlight earning an average of $80,212 in 18 theaters. This bodes well for its expansion this Friday. Last week's winner, The King's Speech, earned a very strong second place with an average of $54,086 in six theaters. I Love You, Phillip Morris and All Good Things opened with nearly identical averages of $18,753 and $18,586 respectively. The Salvation Poem reached the $10,000 mark with an average of $13,124 in two theaters, which is unexpected. More...
