Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

DVD Sales - New Releases Not Playing Around

Eight new releases reached the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and six of them finished in the top seven. The new top-selling DVD was State of Play with 345,000 units sold, which was enough to generate $5.51 million in consumer spending at retail. Heroes - Season Three placed second in terms of units sold with 296,000, but thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it was clearly the highest grossing DVD of the week with $11.10 million in sales. It's the calm before the storm on the home market. There's not a lot of TV on DVD releases this week, but that's temporary, while the summer blockbusters will start flooding the market in just two weeks. From that week till the end of the year, there will be a major blockbuster release coming out practically every week. As for this week, the list of top tier releases is not particularly strong, but there are a trio of DVD Pick of the Week contenders. The first weekend of summer was a success, mostly. Overall the weekend ticket sales amounted to $158 million, which was 39% more than last weekend. Moviegoers Can't Stay Away

The final weekend of April is usually slow, but that was not the case this year, as nearly every film in the top five beat expectations, sometimes by large margins. That helped the overall box office total climb by 5% from last weekend to $114 million. More importantly, that represents a leap of 25% from the same weekend last year. Meet the Spartans made its first major push into the international market this past weekend earning sixth place with $7.94 million on 1653 screens in 14 markets for an early total of $12.90 million. Its biggest opening came in Germany where it scored second place with $3.01 million on 304 screens, however, it earned first place in both Mexico with $1.35 million on 543 screens and in Australia with $1.29 million on 211 screens. Juno nearly climbed into the top five with $7.08 million on 1745 screens in 25 markets for a total of $39.17 million. This includes a surprise first place opening in Brazil with $808,000 on 146 screens over the weekend and $1.26 million in total. Rambo climbed five spots just missing the top five with $6.96 million on 1989 screens in 25 markets for a total of $25.63 million. DVD Sales - New Releases Not Playing Around

Eight new releases reached the top 30 on the sales chart this week, and six of them finished in the top seven. The new top-selling DVD was State of Play with 345,000 units sold, which was enough to generate $5.51 million in consumer spending at retail. Heroes - Season Three placed second in terms of units sold with 296,000, but thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, it was clearly the highest grossing DVD of the week with $11.10 million in sales. It's the calm before the storm on the home market. There's not a lot of TV on DVD releases this week, but that's temporary, while the summer blockbusters will start flooding the market in just two weeks. From that week till the end of the year, there will be a major blockbuster release coming out practically every week. As for this week, the list of top tier releases is not particularly strong, but there are a trio of DVD Pick of the Week contenders. Moviegoers Can't Stay Away

The final weekend of April is usually slow, but that was not the case this year, as nearly every film in the top five beat expectations, sometimes by large margins. That helped the overall box office total climb by 5% from last weekend to $114 million. More importantly, that represents a leap of 25% from the same weekend last year. Box Office Obsession

It's the final weekend before the start of the summer blockbuster season, which means there are not a lot of prime films coming out. Studios don't want to risk A-list films when they only have one week to grab as much box office as possible before they are crushed by the competition. Meet the Spartans made its first major push into the international market this past weekend earning sixth place with $7.94 million on 1653 screens in 14 markets for an early total of $12.90 million. Its biggest opening came in Germany where it scored second place with $3.01 million on 304 screens, however, it earned first place in both Mexico with $1.35 million on 543 screens and in Australia with $1.29 million on 211 screens. Juno nearly climbed into the top five with $7.08 million on 1745 screens in 25 markets for a total of $39.17 million. This includes a surprise first place opening in Brazil with $808,000 on 146 screens over the weekend and $1.26 million in total. Rambo climbed five spots just missing the top five with $6.96 million on 1989 screens in 25 markets for a total of $25.63 million. Thanks to an opening in the U.K., Juno shoot up the charts nearly reaching the top five with $8.28 million on 1111 screens in 15 markets for a still early total $17.15 million. It also opened in France scoring sixth place with $1.22 million on 149 screens, which gave it the second best per screen average in the top ten there. Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.
