Weekend estimates: Uncharted and Dog post strong holds on slow weekend
February 27, 2022
Uncharted and Dog are both taking advantage of the lack of competition to post strong second-week holds this weekend, as Studio 666 and Cyrano failed to extend their grasp beyond their core audience. Uncharted will end the weekend with $83.4 million in the bank, making it the second-highest grossing film in 2022, and the highest-grossing film released this year.
Here’s how the domestic numbers look this morning…
The top three films all came in well ahead of our model’s prediction. That’s almost certain to be partly the result of the lack of new releases, but it’s somewhat surprising to see how well they’re performing compared to other films that have been in the market for while. Death on the Nile, jackass forever, Marry Me, and Scream all came within 10% of their predictions, while Spider-Man: No Way Home joined the top two in outperforming the model by more than 50%. Perhaps the top films remained playing on more screens while the other movies gave up some space for the newcomers. Or maybe people were looking for particular kinds of escapism this weekend.
Studio 666 and Cyrano both came in well behind the model’s predictions, but we also hard films to predict. The opening of Studio 666 probably doesn’t tell us much about broader market trends, but Cyrano’s modest debut suggests that audiences still don’t have a huge appetite for romance. Whether that’s because of pandemic effects or the current geopolitical situation is hard to answer.
