Home Market Releases for April 14th, 2020
April 14, 2020
It’s another bad week on the home market. There’s not much in the way of big releases and only a couple of releases were Pick of the Week contenders. Destry Rides Again: The Criterion Collection and Police Squad: The Complete Series were the only two releases that I was considering and the latter won out in the end.

A classic western from 1939 starring Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart and it is getting the Criterion treatment this week. Extras include a couple of interviews, the radio drama version from 1945 and more. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Busted Oscar-bait. Don’t get me wrong, it is a very good movie, but it isn’t award-worthy. Furthermore, while the DVD / Blu-ray has some extras (a trio of featurettes and some deleted scenes) it is not enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.
I got a screener this week. I didn’t think that would happen until the Covid-19 outbreak at least calmed down and since last week the Canadian government said restrictions could last until the end of June, I thought that would be a long wait. However, not only did I get a screener just before the weekend, it is for the Blu-ray release for Police Squad: The Complete Series. I already own the show on DVD, but is it worth getting on Blu-ray? Read our review for my opinion.
This film is considered a classic of the teenage comedy genre; however, even most fans of the movie will admit there are elements here that have aged poorly, to put it mildly. There are some racist stereotypes and the subject of date rape is used as a joke. If you are a fan of the film and haven’t seen it in a while, I would suggest renting it before spending the money on the special edition Blu-ray.

The biggest TV on DVD release of the week is the Blu-ray for Police Squad, but I included that in the main list, so there’s nothing to add here.
