Limited and VOD Releases: For the Luz
July 19, 2019
It’s an odd week for limited releases, as at first glance there were so many films coming out this week that I feared I would have to be a little more judicious when it came to trimming the list to a manageable size. However, it turns out that wasn’t a problem, as so many films have no, or almost no, reviews. There are some films that are worth checking out, but I don’t know if any of them will find an audience. Rosie does have the best shot, but even then, I’m not bullish about its chances. David Crosby: Remember My Name, I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians, and Luz also deserve to find audiences, but they all have serious obstacles in their way.

Secondary VOD Releases:
A French drama about a company that is earning record profits, but still shuts down one of their factories, and the employees that fight back. The reviews are good, but likely not good enough to thrive in limited release.
A documentary about David Crosby, one of the most famous musicians of the 1960s who is still making music today. The reviews are great and I keep hoping for a breakout documentary hit like we had last year, but I’m less optimistic about the genre’s chances due to the lack of mainstream success we’ve seen this year.
A French romantic comedy about a love triangle. The film’s reviews are merely good, and not good enough to suggest it will be a box office hit.
A drama about a theater director trying to put on a play that is a historically accurate portrayal of the Odessa Massacre and the threats of censorship she has to deal with. The film’s reviews are great, but it is a foreign-language film, so it will likely remain on the art house circuit and won’t be able to expand significantly.
A horror film about a cab driver dealing with a demon-possessed woman. The film’s reviews are great, but horror movies almost never do well in limited release.
A family learns their landlord just sold the house they were renting and now they are homeless. This is one of the few films on this week’s list with a significant number of reviews and those reviews are nearly all positive. Hopefully it will find an audience in theaters this weekend.
Video on Demand
A documentary about R.L. Stine. Its reviews are good, but not great, while it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are negligible.

Purge of Kingdoms - Reviews - Video on Demand
The list of secondary VOD titles this week includes a parody of Game of Thrones. I thought Season Eight was a parody of Game of Thrones.
