Daily Box Office: Ralph Slips, but is still Thankful
November 23, 2018
Yesterday was Thanksgiving and some studios were closed for the day, but we have a full list of box office numbers today. Ralph Breaks the Internet continued to lead the way at the box office with $10.3 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $28.8 million. The film is still well above Coco and Moana’s two-day pace, but it fell 44% from its Wednesday debut, which is a sharper decline than either of those two films suffered. It is on pace to dominate the five-day weekend with $85 million, which is below yesterday’s pace and below Frozen’s record-setting wide expansion, but I can’t imagine there are many people at Disney that are disappointed with this result. The film’s reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore, plus its family friendly target audience should help it last in theaters till the new year and it should be profitable enough that the studio will want to turn the franchise into a trilogy.
Creed II held on much better, as it is aimed at adults and not families. It fell 23% to $8.90 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $20.51 million putting it on pace for $61 million. This is almost exactly what it’s pace was yesterday, so there’s not a lot else to say.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald rose to third place with $6.37 million on Thursday putting it on pace for $44 million over the five-day weekend. The film will break even early in its home market run, but this pales in comparison to the original Harry Potter franchise.
Dr Seuss’ The Grinch slipped to fourth place with $4.78 million on Thursday keeping it on pace for $41 million over the five-day weekend. This is a great result for a film that cost $75 million to make. In fact, if it had made that during its opening weekend, it still would have likely broken even during its initial push onto the home market.
On the other hand, Robin Hood reportedly cost between $90 million and $100 million to make and so far its debut is a disaster. The film added $1.95 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $5.11 million and keeping it on pace for $14 million for the weekend. Lionsgate will lose a fortune on this one.
