Theater Averages: Chef is in Like Flynn

November 14, 2018

Chef Flynn

Chef Flynn debuted on top spot on the theater average chart with $29,869 in one theater. The overall box office chart leader, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, was next with an average of $16,318. The Front Runner followed with an average of $12,886 over the weekend. The film opened on Tuesday, which obviously had some negative effect of its weekend number, but even the full six-day result of $71,742 / $17,936 average isn’t enough to warrant a full wide expansion. El Angel was the final film in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,674 in two theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were close to the $10,000 club. The best of the rest was The Long Dumb Road, but it only managed $4,667 in one theater. Last Letter was close behind with an average of $4,471 in 18 theaters. Thugs of Hindostan was the widest limited release of the week playing in 377 theaters with an average of $3,144. It was a Thursday opening and its four-day $3,846 average was very good, given the size of its release. Postcards From London struggled with $2,686 in one theater.

Narcissister Organ Player missed the Mendoza Line, barely, with $1,983 in its one theater. In Searching was next with $1,545 in two theaters, while Weightless was close behind with an average of $1,258, also in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • 1945 took more than a year, but it got to $1 million.
  • Boy Erased also reached $1 million over the weekend. Its theater average is nearly $10,000, so it will clearly hit more milestones.
  • Thugs of Hindostan opened with more than $1 million, so obviously it hit the $1 million milestone in the process.
  • Can You Ever Forgive Me? made it to $2 million before the weekend and $3 million over the weekend. Its theater average is low enough that it likely won’t expand significantly beyond this point, but it is still doing well enough to hit a couple of more milestones at the least.
  • Beautiful Boy made it to $4 million and $5 million over the weekend. However, it could start losing theaters at this point.
  • Mid90s got all the way to $6 million before the weekend, but it might be done at this point.
  • Free Solo reached $7.5 million before the weekend and if it can become an Awards Season player, it could get to $10 million.
  • As expected, The Old Man and the Gun made it to $10 million.
  • The Hate U Give it one of the biggest limited releases of the year with a running tally of $25 million.
