International Box Office: Venom Sinks its Teeth into China
November 14, 2018
Venom roared into first place with $117.30 million on 44,833 screens in 85 markets for totals of $467.71 million internationally and $674.01 million worldwide. Nearly all of the film’s weekend haul came from China, where it made $107.85 million in 40,000 theaters over the weekend for a total opening of $110.40 million. Whoever made the decision to recut the movie to a PG-13 rating feels like a genius after this result.
Bohemian Rhapsody slipped to second place with $63.0 million in 78 markets for totals of $185.0 million internationally and $285.4 million worldwide. It opened in first place in Japan with $4.3 million. Amazingly, the film saw its box office rise in South Korea to $7.88 million on 1,324 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $14.65 million.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms slipped to third place with $13.5 million in 45 markets for totals of $61.4 million internationally and $97.2 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, which explains its sharp decline this weekend.
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch opened in fourth place with $13.1 million in 23 markets. Nearly half of its takings came from the U.K., where it earned first place with $6.51 million in 559 theaters. However, this is only about half of its opening here, given the relative size of the two markets. The only other market where it opened with more than $1 million was Brazil, where it earned $1.31 million on 546 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.49 million.
Detective Conan: Zero The Enforcer landed in fifth place with $11.57 million over in China for a total opening in that market of $11.63 million. The film earned $80.40 million during its run in its native Japan, which is better than a $300 million hit here, given the relative size of the two markets.
