Weekend Wrap-Up: Spider-Man has Wondrous $117.03 million Opening
July 11, 2017
The weekend box office chart held few surprises. Every film in the top five was close to our predictions, while the top two films were a little stronger. This includes Spider-Man: Homecoming, which pulled in $117.03 million during its opening weekend, making it the second fastest debut of the summer. (Only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is ahead of it in that regard.) Despicable Me 3 held on better than most films this summer and will become a monster hit thanks to its international numbers. Overall, the box office rose by 22% from last weekend hitting $206 million. Unfortunately, this is still 5.1% lower than the same weekend last year. Before the summer began, 2017 had a $200 million lead over 2006. That lead is now down to just $13 million at $5.95 billion to $5.94 billion. This lead could be completely gone by the weekend.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opened with $117.03 million, which is the second biggest opening in the Spider-Man franchise, as only Spider-Man 3 outperformed it. The film’s internal multiplier was on the low side at 2.3, but that’s really the only bad news to report. Its reviews are 93% positive and it earned a solid A from CinemaScore, so it should have good legs. Or to be more accurate, it will have good legs for a Fanboy film. $300 million is the domestic target. It is still too early to tell where it will finish internationally, but there’s no way Sony and Disney are not happy with this result.
Despicable Me 3 added $33.58 million over the weekend to its total, which now sits at $148.77 million after just ten days of release. This is enough to cover its $75 million production budget, while its international total is very likely over its worldwide advertising budget, meaning the film has already broken even. It will be the weakest installment in the franchise domestically, but it is already ahead of the first film internationally.
Baby Driver matched expectations perfectly with $13.00 million over the weekend for a 12-day total of $57.14 million. It could earn enough to pay for its entire production budget before the start of this coming weekend, so profitability is all but assured at this point.
Wonder Woman was next with $9.82 million over the weekend for a total of $368.47 million after six weeks of release. It should come close enough to $400 million that the studio will give it a push over the top.
Transformers: The Last Knight fell 62% to $6.38 million over the weekend for a total of $119.00 million after three weeks of release. Domestically, it is a bomb. It is doing a lot better internationally, but the franchise is no longer the powerhouse it once was.
The only other film in the sophomore class was The House. It fell 45% to $4.78 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $18.59 million. This decline is better than expected, but it is also a case of too little, too late. It could have opened with this much and it would have still been a little disappointing.
