Weekend Wrap-Up: Cars 3 Crosses the Finish Line with $53.69 million
June 20, 2017
As expected, Cars 3 earned first place over the weekend, but it did so with just $53.69 million, which is lower than anticipated. On the other hand, Wonder Woman remains one of the most impressive wide releases of 2017 when it comes to legs. Even if it didn’t earn another dollar, it would still have above average legs. All Eyez on Me went off to a fast start, but has a troubling internal multiplier, which doesn’t bode well for its future. Overall, the box office rose 31% from last weekend to $189 million. Unfortunately, it fell 19% from the same weekend last year and that’s more important. Fortunately, 2017 still has a sizable lead over 2016 at $5.16 billion to $5.00 billion.
Cars 3 opened in first place with $53.69 million, which is the biggest opening for an animated film so far this year, topping The Lego Batman Movie by less than $1 million. It won’t have the same legs, due to weaker reviews and stronger competition. That said, 66% positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and an A from CinemaScore are still selling points and getting to $150 million domestically is a solid goal. Its early international numbers are a little better than Cars 2 managed, so it will likely break even sometime on the home market. Or to be more accurate, it has already broken even due to merchandising. In fact, the movie will likely make so much money from merchandising that it will pay for the production budgets of Coco, The Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4.
Wonder Woman dipped only 29% to $41.27 million over the weekend for a total of $275.10 million after three weeks of release. By this time next week, it will be ahead of Man of Steel in the DCEU and unless Transformers: The Last Knight is such a large hit it sucks the life out of the rest of the box office, Wonder Woman will become the biggest hit in the DCEU. In fact, it has a real shot at $400 million domestically, if it can keep up this pace.
All Eyez on Me had a mixed debut. It earned $12.81 million on Friday, but only $26.44 million over the full weekend. That’s a terrible internal multiplier of 2.06. Its reviews are just 22% positive, but it did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, so audiences liked it better than critics and this is likely a Fanboy Effect. Those interested in the movie rushed out to see it day one, while there was little to no crossover appeal.
The Mummy came within a rounding error of expectations with $14.51 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $57.12 million. It is being saved by its international numbers, but its reviews are so bad that the next film in the Dark Universe might try to distance itself from this one.
47 Meters Down rounded out the top five with $11.21 million. The reviews are 54% positive, while it earned a C from CinemaScore, so it likely won’t have good legs, but it also likely didn’t cost a lot to make, so it will be a financial success for Entertainment-Studios-Motion-Pictures.
The same can’t be said of Rough Night. This film only earned seventh place with $8.00 million over the weekend. Add in mixed reviews and a C plus from CinemaScore and the movie won’t last long in theaters. In fact, it might not make as much in total as we were expecting it would make opening weekend.
It Comes at Night and Megan Leavey were neck-and-neck at the box office this past weekend. The former earned $2.60 million during its sophomore stint for a two-week total of $11.12 million. The latter earned $2.30 million for a two-week total of $8.14 million. Both films are expected to lose significant theater counts this coming weekend.
