Home Market Releases for July 12th, 2016
July 12, 2016
It is a very slow week for the home market. The biggest release of the week is The Divergent: Series Allegiant, which is a movie most people should avoid. (Looking at its box office numbers, most people did avoid it.) As for the best releases, Belladonna Of Sadness is amazing, but the screener arrived late and I don’t like handing out that title when I haven’t had a chance to check out the full release. Fortunately, we do have a backup contender, Everybody Wants Some on Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Belladonna Of Sadness - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The screener arrived while I was writing this column. I can’t get the review done by Tuesday if the screener doesn’t arrive till Tuesday. I will try to get it done this weekend. The reviews are excellent and it looks like a Pick of the Week contender.
It’s off its peak in terms of quality, but still one of the best cartoons currently on TV. I prefer full-season sets, on the other hand.
Video on Demand
Lionsgate is having a rough year and this film is one of the reasons for that. The film was torn apart by critics, and worse still, ignored by moviegoers. Its box office was barely more than half of the previous installment in the franchise. The extras on the DVD include an audio commentary track and two short making of featurettes. The Blu-ray has this, plus half-an-hour of behind-the-scene featurettes. That’s not bad for a first run release, but not great either. It is certainly not enough to overcome its reviews.

Video on Demand
This is the first of two limited releases I got to review this week. Like the other release, this one did well at the box office, but because it was written and directed by Richard Linklater, it was expected to do better. Is it one of his weaker efforts? Or does it deserve to be seen by more? Read our review to find out.
Video on Demand
This film started out really well in limited release, but struggled as soon as it tried to expand significantly. Is the film a little too extreme for the average moviegoer? Yes. But is it worth checking out for fans of more extreme violence? Read our review to find out.
I’m not sure why these re-releases are selling so well, but they are both in the top ten new releases for the week, according to Amazon.com. It’s a great show and if you haven’t seen it yet, definitely check it out.
Video on Demand
This is one of the strangest franchises around. A combination of a toy series and a comic book franchise. This should be a complete cash grab, but it is actually a fun series and worth checking out.
Video on Demand
A faith-based film that has a better cast than usual. The reviews were mixed, but the domestic box office was relatively good. If you are part of the target audience, then this film is better than most, it’s worth picking up. If you are not in the target audience, but like the cast, then maybe it is worth a rental, at most.
I’ve previously preview several DVD releases for this TV show and I do like the show much more than most aimed at the same age range. That said, the show is off its peak in terms of quality and the buzz.
There were a bunch of Hallmark Movie and Murder releases last week, so I’m not sure why this one is being released this week.

It’s a slow week on the home market, and this is doubly true when it comes to secondary Blu-ray releases. Carnival of Souls is the only one that really interests me.

There are a number of 4K releases this week, but they are all either IMAX edutainment, or from the Divergent franchise. I would stick with the IMAX edutainment.

Hardcore Henry is the only release on this week’s list that earned good buzz and mixed or better reviews. Even then, it feels like a really good rental and that’s it.
