International Box Office: Warcraft Crushes Competition in China on way to $185.8 Million Weekend
June 16, 2016
Warcraft roared into first place with $185.8 million in 52 markets for totals of $261.7 million internationally and 285.9 million worldwide. There are some amazing news to report from over the weekend, but also some bad news. First the positive news. The film broke records in China earning $156.17 million during its five-day opening. That topped the previous record held by Furious 7. Unfortunately, outside of China, its box office run was much closer to its North American debut. For example, it earned second place in South Korea with $4.26 million on 736 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.09 million. Because of how much money the film is earning in China and how little of that the studio sees, the film could make $600 million internationally and still struggle to break even.
The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist opened in second place with $50.0 million in 44 markets. The film's biggest single market was Mexico, where it made $7.50 million over the weekend for a total opening of $9.04 million. By comparison, the first film made $18 million in Mexico in total. On the other hand, the film only managed fourth place in South Korea with $3.43 million on 635 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.93 million. However, this is on par with what the first film made there.
X-Men: Apocalypse was pushed into third place with $25.0 million in 76 markets over the weekend for totals of $342.0 million internationally and $478.3 million worldwide. The film will hit $500 million this weekend, which is enough to break even sometime during its home market run.
Now You See Me 2 earned fourth place with $20.1 million in 30 markets over the weekend for an early international total of $22.8 million. The film's biggest market was Russia, where it opened with $7.19 million on 1,122 screens. Unfortunately, this is roughly $1 million less than its predecessor opened with in that market. On the other hand, the film earned $1.8 million during its in Brazil, compared to $1.45 million the first film made there. It's too soon to tell where the film will finish, but the studio needs it to be the on high end, because they can't afford another box office miss.
Alice Through the Looking Glass rounded out the top five with $14.6 million in 44 markets for totals of $151.0 million internationally and $213.5 million worldwide. The film has yet to open in Japan, South Korea, and some other markets, but it would have to be massive hits there in order to break even anytime soon.
