International Box Office: Mission Completes Hattrick, but International Fair Thrives

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation remained in first place for the third weekend in a row with $46.1 million in 63 markets over the weekend for totals of $235.3 million internationally and $373.6 million worldwide. The film's biggest opening was in France where it easily earned first place with $7.96 million on 719 screens. It also earned first place with $2.99 million on 947 screens in Brazil. The film isn't quite done its international run. It opens in Italy this weekend and China next month. It should have no trouble getting to $300 million internationally and could get all the way to $500 million worldwide. China could be a huge market for the movie.
Go Away Mr. Tumor opened in first place in China and second place internationally with $21.5 million over the weekend for a total opening of $31.52 million, including previews.
Veteran remained in first place in South Korea and rose to third place internationally with $15.22 million on 1,115 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $43.85 million. Its weekend haul was actually 16% higher than its opening, which is even more impressive.
Fantastic Four fell to fourth place with $16.2 million in 55 markets for an international total of $60.1 million and a worldwide total of $102.2 million. Its biggest opening came from Germany, but it only managed sixth place there with $581,000 on 474 screens.
Minions earned fifth place with $15.0 million in 63 markets for totals of $644.5 million internationally and $957.4 million worldwide. It is on pace to reach $1b million worldwide, barely, and that is without taking its upcoming openings in Italy and China.
Brothers: Blood Against Blood opened in nine markets with $12.7 million over the weekend including a first place, $10.80 million opening on 2,100 screens in India.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. opened in seventh place with $12.0 million in 24 markets. It did earn first place in Russia with $3.09 million on 1,804 screens. This is much better than its opening here, relative to the size of the two markets. It only made fourth place in the U.K. with $2.27 million in 503 theaters. Other major market openings include Australia (second place with $1.20 million on 289 screens) and Germany (fifth place with $652,000 on 485).
Pixels rose a spot to eighth place with $12.0 million in 81 theaters for totals of $91.1 million internationally and $155.6 million worldwide. It managed first place in the U.K. with $4.17 million in 511 theaters. That's not a great start when compared to its start here, but Adam Sandler's movies rarely do well internationally. Grown Ups 2 was his previous best live action film at the international box office and that movie only made $2.57 million during its opening in that market.
Monster Hunt landed in ninth place with $11.65 million in China for a total of $349.43 million. It needs about another 200 million yuan to overtake Furious 7 for top spot on the all-time chart in its native market. That works out to about $35 million.
Inside Out rounded out the top ten with $11.4 million in 56 markets over the weekend for totals of $327.6 million internationally and $667.0 million worldwide. Like last week, the film had no major market openings this week. It has yet to open in Italy, Germany, and China, so it has some gas left in its tank.
Jurassic World fell out of the top ten, but there was still some news to report, as it grew by 11% in Japan earning $7.57 million on 795 screens over the weekend for a total of $35.07 million after two weeks of release. Overall, it made $8.9 million in 64 markets for totals of $968.3 million internationally and $1.606 billion worldwide. Films in Japan tend to have long legs, but getting to $1 billion internationally will be tough.
Assassination was next with $6.61 million on 767 screens in South Korea giving it a total of $69.56 million after four weeks of release. By this time next week, the film will have overtaken The Avengers: Age of Ultron's year-best total of $75.83 million in this market.
