International Box Office: Minions Crowd Out the Competition
July 15, 2015
Matching its stellar domestic debut, Minions rose to first place with $130.7 million on 9,606 screens in 56 markets at the international box office at the weekend for totals of $287.77 million internationally and $403.49 million worldwide. The film debuted in 30 new markets, earned first place in all of them, and broke the record for the biggest animated opening in 28 of them. This includes Russia, where it earned $15.12 million on 1,209 screens, which is the biggest opening in that market, animated or otherwise. Its biggest opening was in Mexico, where the film earned $15.72 million on 692 screens over the weekend. Meanwhile, it earned first place in France with a total opening of $12 million on 868 screens. It remains above Despicable Me 2's pace and this puts it on track to reach $1 billion worldwide.
Terminator: Genisys was pushed into second place with $47.3 million in 61 markets for totals $156.1 million internationally and $224.9 million worldwide. The film's biggest new market was Japan, where it earned first place with $4.25 million on 737 screens over the weekend, for a total opening of $5.5 million. Germany was next with $2.76 million on 554 screens over the weekend, for a total opening of $3.1 million. The film had the best opening for the studio in Argentina with $2.32 million on 249 screens. If the film can get to $300 million internationally, then the studio might go ahead with the other proposed films in the franchise and the domestic release won't matter for its box office chances.
Forever Young opened in second place in China with $41.42 million, which was enough for third place internationally.
Tiny Times 4.0 opened in first place in China with $58.39 million, but that was over four days. Over three days, it earned $36 million.
Jurassic World rounded out the top five with $21.7 million in 66 markets for totals of $875.2 million internationally and $1.466 billion worldwide. It is on pace to overtake Furious 7 before too long.
Inside Out slipped a spot to sixth with $19.1 million in 45 markets over the weekend for totals of $151.8 million internationally and $436.0 million worldwide. The film's only major opening of the weekend was South Korea, where it landed in second place with $4.66 million on 777 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.12 million.
Monkey Kingļ¼Hero is Back opened in third place in China with $13.89 million over the weekend for a total opening of $15.39 million.
Ted 2 was next with $12.4 million in 36 markets internationally for a total of $53.2 million. This includes a second place, $6.04 million opening in 549 theaters in the U.K. That is about on par with the film's opening here.
Magic Mike XXL earned ninth place with $10.3 million in 31 markets over the weekend for an international total of $20.5 million. The film only managed third place during its debut in Australia with $3.05 million in 401 theaters. That's about on par with its opening here, but about $1 million less than the original opened with in that market. That said, the film has already made enough to cover its production budget, so it should break even early in its home market run.
Northern Limit Line returned to first place in South Korea with $5.80 million in 777 theaters over the weekend for a three-week total of $30.98 million.
