DVD Sales: Hero Saves the Day

March 15, 2015

New releases earned the top three spots on the DVD sales chart this week. This includes Big Hero 6, which opened in first place with 963,000 units / $14.44. This isn't at the same level as Frozen opened with, but it is already the second best selling DVD in 2015.

Horrible Bosses 2 earned second place with 173,000 units / $2.67 million. This is better than it sold on Blu-ray, but weaker than its predecessor opened with. Sons of Anarchy: The Final Season was third in terms of units with 124,000 units old, but second in terms of revenue at $3.62 million. Dumb and Dumber To fell to fourth with 73,000 units / $1.26 million over the week for totals of 313,000 units / $5.33 million after two. The Interview rounded out the top five with 60,000 units / $596,000 for the week. After two weeks of release, the film has sold 265,000 units and generated $2.65 million in revenue.

Beyond the Lights managed seventh place during its opening week with 51,000 units / $844,000. The film flopped at the box office, but I was hoping its reviews would help it perform better on the home market. That doesn't appear to be the case. Whiplash opened in tenth place with 34,000 units / $510,000. This isn't good, but it did do better on Blu-ray. The final new release to chart was Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse, which opened in 16th place with 27,000 units / $516,000.
