Bean, James Bean
April 19, 2003
Rowan Atkinson, probably best known for his portrayal of Mr. Bean is helping protect the British Crown in his latest movie, Johnny English. In it, he plays a not quite suave and not quite sophisticated secret agent, sort of a cross between Mr. Bean and James Bond. (An interesting piece of trivia, two decades earlier Rowan Atkinson played a similar character in Never Say Never Again.) And while Johnny English doesn’t open domestically till July 18th, it has already opened overseas in almost two dozen markets, and opened #1 in most of them, including huge opening in the UK and Germany. However, all this success doesn’t guarantee a hit here. After all, Bean gross $232 million worldwide back in 1997, but less than $50 million of that was from the domestic market.
