International Top Five - Audiences Still Haven't Had Their Fill of Ratatouille
October 24, 2007
Ratatouille remained in first place over the weekend as it topped $300 million internationally and $500 million worldwide. Over the weekend the film opened in first place in Italy with $6.29 million on 658 screens over the weekend and $7.26 million in total, which is the best opening for a Pixar film in that market. It also topped the charts in Sweden with $1.71 million on 183 screens over the weekend and $2.03 million in total and Poland with $1.24 million on 130 screens over the weekend and $1.49 million. Overall, Ratatouille added $30.11 million on 4168 screens in 29 markets for a total of $310.12 million internationally and $515.03 million worldwide. The film could reach $400 million internationally, especially with its impressive legs so far. In the U.K. the film was down only 31% to $6.26 million on 535 screens over the weekend and $18.38 million in total, while in Germany it was down just 1% to $6.40 million on 860 screens over the weekend and $29.24 million in total. The only Pixar film to make more in that latter market was Finding Nemo at $54 million, which is in all likelihood out of reach, but not completely out of the question.
Openings in a couple major markets helped Stardust into second place with $8.53 million on 2120 screens in 38 markets for a total of $42.47 million. The film opened in second place in the U.K. with $4.59 million on 445 screens and in third place in Germany with $1.11 million on 344 screens. The film has already topped its domestic totals and should have no problem reaching $100 million worldwide. In fact, with openings in France, Spain, and Japan yet to happen, it could reach $100 million internationally.
Resident Evil: Extinction earned $6.02 million on 2735 screens in 30 markets for a total of $50.34 million. This includes a third place, $1.61 million opening on 290 screens in South Korea while it declined 54% in the U.K. adding $880,000 on 311 screens over the weekend to its total of $3.65 million. It was even worse in Australia falling from first to sixth with $467,000 on 138 screens over the weekend and $1.89 million in total. The film's quick declines are killing its box office numbers, but it should still earn enough to show a profit.
The Orphanage held on strong in Spain down just 31% to $5.07 million on 367 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.15 million so far. Only Death at a Funeral had a better week-to-week drop-off in the top twenty there while it earned more than the rest of the top ten combined.
Rush Hour 3 returned to the top five with $4.59 million on 1722 screens in 37 markets for a total of $103.88 million. Hitting $100 million internationally and it is very close to topped Rush Hour internationally and worldwide. The film was able to open in first place in France with $2.51 million on 479 screens, but I was expecting more since the film is set in France.
