International Top One - Spider-Man Spins a Worldwide Web
May 9, 2007
Spider-Man 3's performance on the international scene was truly amazing as it outpaced almost all expectations and beat earlier weekend estimates.
The film earned $176.84 million overall on 16,711 screens in 75 markets and since its opening last Tuesday the film has already made $230.89 million.
This means the film surpassed 300 in less than one week, to become the biggest international hit of the year, and should do the same on the worldwide chart by the weekend.
In every single market the film opened in, it finished first, including record openings in 29 markets.
Over the weekend there was really only one major Hollywood release that dared to challenge Spider-Man 3 in a head-to-head battle and that was Bridge to Terabithia. That film took second to the web-slinger in the U.K. with a strong $2.08 million on 409 screens, but we'll deal more with it, and the rest of the top 30 on Sunday's edition of the International Details.
The best of the best are, (record-breakers in bold):
The film also broke records in a number of midlevel or smaller markets:
Other $1 million, but non-record breaking markets include:
A couple of notes, the film didn't perform up to expectations in a few markets. For instance, it was unable to match the previous releases in the franchise in Australia, while it wasn't even the biggest opening of the year in Turkey finishing third behind 300 and a local hit. However, it is safe to call those few results anomalous compared to the overall, worldwide domination.
