International Top Five - Knight is King
August 27, 2008
The Dark Knight remained in first place with $34.28 million on 7194 screens in 62 markets for a total of $377.64 million internationally and $867.06 million worldwide. This week the film debuted in first place in Germany with $9.79 million on 754 screen, which is roughly five times what the original made when it opened there in 2005. It also remained in first place in France with $5.8 million on 820 screens for a total of $17.7 million, which is more than the original made in total. Its best market so far remains the U.K. where it has made $79.84 million, including 2.67 million on 440 screens this past weekend. On the other hand, the film is running out of markets to open in, and it will have trouble matching its domestic total. Perhaps it will reach $1 billion worldwide, but that's not a sure thing.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor crossed $200 million since last week and with $13.99 million on 5601 screens in 51 markets over the weekend it has $223.87 million in total. In Japan the film made $2.21 million on 547 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.95 million after two week. With openings in Australia and Italy yet to happen, it could be the best of the franchise, at least internationally.
Mamma Mia! is marching towards $100 million, in the U.K. alone. This weekend the film made $3.37 million on 510 screens for a total of $92.26 million and overall it earned $13.44 million on 2796 screens in 29 markets for a total of $234.64 million internationally and $359.11 million.
You Don't Mess With The Zohan climbed one spot to fourth with $10.38 million on 1978 screens in 28 markets for a total of $56.44 million, which is better than most Adam Sandler end their run with internationally. This weekend it opened in first place in Spain with $3.18 million on 338 screens, which was again the biggest opening for an Adam Sandler film. The film still has several markets left to open and it could reach $100 million internationally, making it only the second $100 million international hit in Adam Sandler's career after Click.
WALL-E rounded out the top five with $8.53 million on 3329 screens in 31 markets for a total of $162.38 million. The film had no major openings this weekend, but it still made $2.7 million in France, which was down just 1% from its opening there. Granted, no one expects it to match Ratatouille there, but $12 million after two weeks is still a great start.
