DVD Sales: Mega Close Race
March 8, 2011
There was a close race for top spot on the sales chart this week between two new releases. Megamind won that race with 949,000 units / $13.28 million to 923,000 units / $12.92 million for Due Date. But to be fair to Megamind, it went on sale on Friday not Tuesday like Due Date did.
Unstoppable was pushed to third place, but with still healthy sales of 368,000 units / $5.80 million for the week and totals of 1.14 million units / $18.19 million after two. Weeds: Season Six landed in fourth place during its opening week with 175,000 units and thanks to its TV on DVD pricing, generated $4.19 million in sales. Life As We Know It popped back into the top five with 134,000 units for the week and 890,000 units after three.
All-Star Superman opened in seventh place with 125,000 units / $2.01 million, which is great for a direct-to-DVD release. Get Low opened in 18th place with 70,000 units / $1.19 million, which is great for a limited release.
When I saw that Megamind and Due Date were so close together on top of the DVD sales chart, I assumed Due Date would win when it came to Blu-ray, but that was not the case. (In fact, Megamind actually had a higher percentage on High Definition, although it was very close.) Megamind won with 380,000 units to 330,000 units. All-Star Superman was well back in third place with 90,000 units, but that was very close to its DVD sales number. Unstoppable was pushed to fourth place with 80,000 for the week and 400,000 after two. Finally, Weeds: Season Six opened in fifth place with 40,000 units.
