DVD Sales: Number One for Three
July 31, 2012
New releases dominated the DVD sales chart taking three of the top five spots and six of the top eleven. This includes a new number one film, The Three Stooges, which sold 378,000 units while generating $7.55 million in opening week revenue. This is a good start compared to its theatrical run, but not a great start. Additionally, it didn't have a strong theatrical run, so this is more damning it with faint praise.
American Reunion was pushed into second place with 142,000 units / $2.84 million over the week for totals of $586,000 units / $9.94 million after two. If they were hoping to revitalize the franchise, they didn't succeed. Get the Gringo managed third place with 117,000 units / $1.75 million during its first week of release. This is a great start for a VOD premeire release; however, when you give money to Mel Gibson to write and star in a movie, you expect more than this. Lockout was right behind with 115,000 units / $1.96 million. It bombed in theaters and it is bombing on DVD. 21 Jump Street fell to fifth place with 98,000 units / $1.76 million over the week for a month-long total of 1.36 million units / $23.71 million. It's one of the few bright spots on the chart.
Casa de Mi Padre just missed the top five with 86,000 units / $1.03 million. I'm not sure if this is a success or not. On the one hand, it was only a limited release. On the other hand, it was a bigger limited release than most and its P&A budget might have been a little high, and with that, expectations might have also been higher. Eureka: Season Five rounded out the top ten with 73,000 units / $1.52 million, which is excellent for a cable show. Friends with Kids was right behind with 66,000 units / $1.03 million.
