DVD Sales: March 31st, 2013: Lincoln Leads and Holdovers Soar

May 19, 2013

The week of March 31st, 2013 was a strange week on the home market, as it contained Easter weekend. Easter sales helped a lot of older releases rise on the DVD sales chart. Even so, a new release, Lincoln, led the way with 818,000 units / $15.62 million. Les Miserables remained in second place thanks to 39% growth. It sold 523,000 units and generated $10.44 million during the week, lifting its totals to 900,000 units / $17.95 million after two. Rise of the Guardians rose 81% to 500,000 units / $9.87 million for the week giving the film totals of 1.58 million units / $27.31 million after three weeks of release. Wreck-it Ralph climbed a spot to fourth place with 484,000 units / $9.65 million for the week, which was more than double the number of units it sold the week before. After nearly a month of release, the film has sold 2.15 million units and generated $39.98 million in total sales. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fell from first to fifth with 426,000 units / $5.39 million for the week for totals of 1.50 million units / $18.43 million after two.

Parental Guidance opened in sixth place with 339,000 units / $5.91 million, which is not a bad start compared to its theatrical run. Killing Them Softly only managed 13th place with 116,000 units / $1.66 million. It did struggle at the box office, so this opening it not unexpected. A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape From Paradise opened in 16th place with 76,000 units / $1.13 million. This is good, for a direct-to-DVD sequel to a direct-to-DVD release. The Collection only managed 20th place with 60,000 units / $856,000. The film only opened semi-wide in theaters, so this debut on the home market is within expectations.
