Synopsis
How can the boundaries of what can be said and seen be shifted through art—despite, or perhaps because of, all the resistance? A good 50 years ago, a handful of artists declared the former socialist showcase city of Chemnitz/Karl-Marx-Stadt an avant-garde happening zone. Whether silent performances or plein-air events by the sea, exuberant artists’ festivals or drypoint collective works—the Clara Mosch artist group and the cooperatively organized Galerie Oben have proven since the 1970s that art can be free in the GDR. And is in no way inferior to Western role models like Joseph Beuys.
