Theater counts: Venom fends off a host of newcomers to remain widest release

Despite the arrival of seven wide releases, Venom: The Last Dance remains the box office frontrunner, securing just short of $26 million over the weekend, taking its domestic total to $89.85 million, while currently enjoying a 13-day total of nearly $97 million. The Venom franchise now holds a global cume of $1.68 billion, with a $323 million contribution from this latest installment. This week sees the debut of five new wide releases, all poised to take on the current box office champ.

It was a slightly lower beginning for Venom: The Last Dance in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, but the film nevertheless bit off $51 million making it the number one film in the land, and by a large margin. The last installment in the Venom franchise now holds a six-day North American total of just over $61 million, and has propelled the franchise past $1.5 billion in global earnings. Venom: The Last Dance remains on top in theater counts in its second weekend, playing in 4,131 venues, despite the handful of newcomers entering cinemas.

Weekend projections: Venom debuts with disappointing $51-million weekend

On Friday, our prediction model said Venom: The Last Dance would earn $54 million this weekend. I thought the model was overly pessimistic, and that the super-hero movie will land somewhere in the 60s. Well, I was wrong and the model was right. With just $51 million projected this morning by Sony Pictures, this is another miss for the super hero genre.
